Growing Numbers Surf the Web for Fun

More Americans are turning to the internet as a place to hang out.

The Pew Internet & American Life Project is a non-profit organization that researches the impact of the Internet on children, families, communities, the work place, schools, health care and civic/political life.

In February, the Pew organization released a a recent survey report which indicates a striking increase in the role the Internet plays as an activity to pass the time or as a tool used to hang out. Simply just "surfing the Web" has become one of the most popular activities that Internet users will do online on a typical day.

Here are a couple of interesting statistics from the new "Browsing for Fun" report conducted in December '05:
  • 40 million people said they were surfing for fun on a typical day, up from 25 million people in November 2004.
  • 30% of Internet users go online on any given day for no particular reason, just for fun or to pass the time.
  • 52% of Internet users go online to send/receive e-mail - still the #1 use of the Internet on a typical day.
  • 31% of Internet users go online to get news updates.
  • This kind of idle browsing cuts through all races, income groups, and levels of educational accomplishment.
Two main factors seem to be related to the increase in this idle Web surfing:
1- The growing amount of content and applications available on the Web. (The number of Web sites grew from 17 million in the middle of 2000 to 65 million in the middle of 2005.)

2- The increasing number of people who have broadband access in their homes.
Socket's Vice President of Research and Development, John Dupuy, had this to say about the findings of this recent study,"The increase in people using the Internet to simply Web surf for no particular reason also indicates the average Internet user is probably becoming more comfortable with navigating the Web, so they enjoy using it even more now than for just the standard e-mail communications."

The results reported were gathered through telephone interviews conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates between November 29 to December 31, 2005, among a sample of 3,011 adults.

Go to the report at http://www.pewinternet.org/PPF/r/175/report_display.asp to view more results and details about "Browsing For Fun" or go to the Pew Internet Project home page to view other Internet research reports or latest trends.
